The short answer
SEO is the work of getting your website found when someone searches for what you sell. It covers technical health, content, local visibility and links from other sites. AR Digital Solutions runs SEO in house for Australian businesses, month to month, and reports on enquiries rather than rankings.
Four workstreams, running at the same time
Most agencies sell one of these and call it SEO. All four have to move together.
Technical.
Can Google crawl the site, index the right pages and load them fast on a phone? It's where most stalled campaigns are actually stuck. See technical SEO, or WordPress SEO if that's your platform. Changing platform or domain is its own risk: SEO migration.
Content.
Pages that answer what the person typed, not 2,000 words padded around a keyword. For stores that means category pages that rank instead of hiding behind a filter: eCommerce SEO.
Local.
Your Business Profile, your reviews, your service areas, and whether your details match everywhere. With a van or a shopfront, this is usually the fastest win on the list. See local SEO.
Authority.
Links and mentions from sites that carry weight in your industry, earned through digital PR and outreach rather than bought from a network that gets deindexed. See link building.
What AI search changed, and what it didn't
Google's AI Overviews sit above the results on a large share of queries now. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answer plenty more without anyone opening a website. Most of what's being sold about this is nonsense.
The traffic you lose mostly never converted.
"What is conveyancing" was never a customer. That gets answered on the results page now, so if your reporting is built on sessions the numbers look worse while enquiries stay flat. A metric expiring, not a campaign failing.
The clicks that remain are commercial.
Comparing providers, checking prices, finding someone nearby, reading reviews before calling. Nobody hires a builder on a chatbot's say so without opening the website.
Being named inside AI answers is the new ranking.
The models pull from pages they can crawl, your Business Profile, review sites, directories and news coverage. So the work is the same. Be crawlable, answer plainly near the top of the page, keep your details consistent, and get mentioned by sources the models trust. Digital PR got more valuable, not less.
What's oversold.
Nobody can buy placement in an AI Overview. Any tool claiming to track your ChatGPT rankings is showing a sample, not a position, because the answer changes with the user and the prompt. A schema plugin won't get you cited, and hiding instructions in your page text wastes a day.

How long this actually takes
Low competition and local terms usually start moving in eight to twelve weeks. Competitive national keywords take six to twelve months, sometimes longer, depending on how far behind you start.
What changes it: the age of the domain, its existing links, the state of the site, and what your competitors spend.
Anyone promising page one in 30 days is either targeting keywords nobody searches or lying. The usual trick is a ranking report full of terms like "affordable plumber services company" that no human types. Looks like progress. Produces no phone calls.
Need leads next month, not next quarter? Say so on the first call. We'll run paid search to carry the gap, then wind the ads back when the SEO can hold it.
Not sure whether your problem is technical, content or links? The audit tells you which.
How an SEO campaign runs
We audit before we promise anything
Crawl, Search Console, rankings, competitors and what's converting now. Findings in writing, including where you're fine.
We clear the technical blockers
No point publishing onto a site Google struggles to crawl.
We build and we earn
Pages aimed at demand that already exists, local signals cleaned up, links chased monthly.
We report and adjust
What moved, what didn't, what changes next month.
What lands in your inbox
A monthly report that opens with enquiries. Calls, forms and sales against last month and the same month last year. Then what we did and what's next.
Rankings, impressions and AI Overview appearances sit further down, because they're how we check our work rather than how you should judge it. Bad month, the report says so.
Who this suits, and who it doesn't
It works for businesses people already search for. Trades competing locally, stores with real ranges, multi location operators, professional services where one client is worth thousands, and agencies wanting it under their own brand (whitelabel SEO).
It's a poor fit if you need enquiries inside four weeks and won't run ads alongside, if nobody searches for what you sell yet, or if you want cheap links and a screenshot.
Why clients stay
Your SEO lead sits near your ads lead.
All 32 staff are ours. When the ads team finds a search term that converts, the SEO team hears that week. Nothing is offshored.
No lock in contracts.
Month to month. Leave whenever you want and take everything with you.
You own the accounts.
Search Console, Analytics, your Business Profile and the content are in your name, handed over on request.
"We've been burned by an SEO agency before."
Most have, and it's the same story every time. Ask for the audit before you spend anything. You'll get a document you could hand to another agency. See case studies.
