Website design

OpenCart developer for Australian online stores

An OpenCart developer builds, fixes and extends stores on OpenCart, the free open-source ecommerce platform written in PHP. We help Australian businesses upgrade old OpenCart versions, build custom extensions and make slow stores faster and safer. If moving to Shopify would serve you better, we'll say so.

Website design: OpenCart, upgraded and extended.

The short answer

Brisbane OpenCart developer for custom extensions, version upgrades, speed fixes, security and multi-store setups. Honest advice on staying or moving to Shopify.

Why OpenCart still makes sense for some stores

OpenCart is lean and doesn't charge a monthly platform fee. You own the code and the data, and you can host it wherever you like. It handles large catalogues, product options and multiple storefronts from one admin, which is why plenty of Australian retailers and trade suppliers still run it.

PHP and MariaDB are daily tools for our team, so we fix the code directly instead of stacking up extensions.

Custom extensions

The OpenCart Marketplace has thousands of extensions, but they don't always fit how you trade. We build custom modules for things like:

  • Trade and wholesale pricing by customer group
  • Australian shipping integrations and custom freight rules
  • Product feeds for Google Merchant Center
  • Links to accounting, CRM or warehouse systems

We build extensions using OpenCart's event system and OCMOD where possible, instead of editing core files. That makes future upgrades far less painful.

Upgrades from older versions

Many stores are still on OpenCart 1.5, 2.x or early 3.0. Older versions often don't run on current PHP versions, which leaves your store exposed and stops hosts from updating the server safely.

Upgrading isn't a one-click job, as themes and extensions often need rebuilding. We start with a full backup and a staging copy, migrate your products, customers and orders, rebuild what's needed, then test checkout before switching over. URLs are kept or redirected so your search traffic isn't lost.

Speed and security

Slow OpenCart stores are usually caused by bloated extensions, unoptimised images, missing caching or underpowered hosting. We profile the store, remove what isn't needed, compress images and tune the database. Then we check Core Web Vitals in PageSpeed Insights and Google Search Console.

For security, we rename the admin folder, update PHP, remove abandoned extensions, set correct file permissions and add SSL and firewall rules. Our own cPanel/WHM server hosts 200+ client websites in Australia, and we can host your store there with regular backups. See hosting and technology.

Multi-store setups

OpenCart can run several storefronts from one admin, each with its own domain, theme, prices and product range. It suits retail and trade stores, or separate brands sharing stock. We set up the stores, shared catalogues and separate SEO settings so each site stands on its own.

Fun fact

The .au country domain was first delegated in March 1986. Since March 2022, Australians have been able to register direct .au domains like yourname.au.

When to move to Shopify instead

We'll be honest here. OpenCart needs someone technical to keep it updated, and it has a smaller developer community than it once did. If any of these sound like you, Shopify is probably the better home:

  • You want to run the store yourself without a developer on call
  • Your version is so old that upgrading costs nearly as much as rebuilding
  • You rely on outdated extensions nobody maintains any more
  • You want built-in POS, Shop Pay and easy app integrations

We'm a Shopify Partner, and we handle OpenCart to Shopify migrations, including products, customers, order history where possible and 301 redirects. Our website migration process covers how we protect rankings.

Marketing tip

Log in to your OpenCart admin today and check the version number in the footer. Then list every extension you have installed and cross out any you no longer use. That short list is the starting point for any upgrade quote.

  • It can be, especially for stores with large catalogues and a developer on hand. It's free and flexible, but it needs technical upkeep. For owners who want to manage everything themselves, Shopify is often easier.
