The short answer
- Emergency plumbing searches are settled in the map results, usually on a phone, in under a minute.
- Planned work is won on the page: photos of finished jobs, clear process, honest cost ranges.
- Service and suburb pages work when there is real demand and real local content behind them. Otherwise Google will not index them.
- Steady, recent reviews matter more for a plumber than almost any other on-site change.
- If the after-hours phone rings out, no amount of ranking fixes it.
A plumbing business lives off two streams of work that behave nothing alike online. One is the burst pipe at 6am, where the customer rings the first number they see and price barely registers. The other is the bathroom renovation, where three quotes get compared over a fortnight and your website is part of the decision.
Most plumbing sites are built for the second and rank for neither. This page covers how we set a plumbing business up to win both, based on the trade client work we run out of Brisbane.
Emergency intent is decided in the map pack
Someone with water across the laundry floor types three words and taps the first listing. There is no browsing. The map block sits above the ordinary results and fills a phone screen, so the businesses in it take the bulk of those calls.
Google ranks that block on relevance, distance from the searcher, and how prominent the business is across the web. Distance is fixed, which is why no plumbing business covers an entire metro from the map alone. Around your base you can dominate. Beyond it, the website has to carry you.
What we do for the emergency side of a plumbing business:
- Get the Google Business Profile complete and active, with the emergency services listed individually rather than lumped into one line.
- Build dedicated pages for the searches themselves, so burst pipes, blocked drains, hot water failures and gas leaks each have a page rather than sharing one.
- Strip the emergency pages back so they load fast and the phone number is tappable without scrolling.
- Keep reviews arriving steadily, because recency counts and a listing that stopped collecting reviews two years ago looks dormant.
The wording of those pages matters more than people expect. Customers do not search "drainage services", they search "drain blocked won't drain". Writing the page in the words they use is not keyword stuffing, it is just answering the question they asked.
Planned work is a slower, different job
Bathroom and laundry renovations, hot water system replacements, full re-pipes and new-build plumbing all get researched. The searcher reads. They want to know what it costs, how long they will be without a bathroom, and whether your finished work looks like something they would want in their house.
Those pages need photos of your own completed jobs with a sentence about each one, a plain explanation of how the job runs from quote to final inspection, and a cost range if you are willing to give one. Refusing to discuss price is a choice, and it moves the enquiry to whoever will.
This is also the work where AI search tools increasingly sit between you and the customer. Someone asking an assistant what a hot water replacement involves gets an answer assembled from pages that explain it clearly. Being the page that explains it properly is how you end up cited.
Service and suburb pages without the spam
The usual advice is to build a page for every service crossed with every suburb. Done badly that produces hundreds of near-identical pages, and Google filters them.
We know where the line is because we tested it on our own website. In September 2026 we ran all 491 of our service-area keywords through the SE Ranking API on Google Australia. 371 rank in the top 100, 297 are in the top 10 and 128 sit at number one. The pages that were not indexed were overwhelmingly the ones built for suburb terms with no recorded search volume. Google crawled them, found no fault, and had no query to serve them into.
For a plumbing business that translates to a short rule. Build the service pages for everything you do, because those searches all exist. Build suburb pages only where there is measured demand, and give each one something real: the age of the housing in that area, the pipe material you keep finding there, the jobs that keep coming up, a couple of nearby examples of your own work.
Review velocity, and how to actually keep it up
Reviews decide close contests in the map results, and for plumbers the flow matters as much as the total. A business with 60 reviews collected over six years reads differently to one with 60 collected over the last eight months.
The system that works for the trade clients we run is not complicated. Ask at the end of the job while you are still on site. Send the link by text before you leave. Keep a short link saved in the phone so it takes seconds. Put a QR code on the invoice for the ones who mean to and forget.
Do not screen who you ask based on how you expect them to rate you, because that is review gating and Google treats it as a policy issue. Reply to all of them. The reply to a difficult review is read by the next customer far more often than by the person who wrote it.
After-hours calls are part of the campaign
A plumbing business that markets itself for emergencies and misses calls at night is paying for leads it never receives. Before we build anything we ask what happens to a call at 11pm and to a form submission at 2am.
Say the hours you genuinely answer rather than putting 24/7 on the site and hoping. If you use an answering service, state what response time to expect. Set an automatic reply on after-hours forms confirming when someone will ring back, so the enquiry is still warm in the morning. We put call tracking on every trade campaign, because a rankings report cannot tell you the difference between SEO that is not working and a phone nobody picked up.

Where we work
Brisbane. Our office is at 1 Cheshire St, Pallara, and our trade client results all come from Brisbane businesses. Brisbane plumbing has its own search pattern. Summer storms push blocked drain and stormwater searching into short violent spikes, and the older suburbs closer in are full of houses on original clay and galvanised pipe, which is very different work to the new estates out south and west. Those two markets want separate pages.
Melbourne. Melbourne businesses work with our Brisbane team. The demand pattern there leans harder on burst pipes and hot water in the colder months rather than the storm-driven spikes we get, and the competitive field is tighter because more plumbing businesses sit inside the same few kilometres. Once proximity stops separating competitors, reviews and the quality of the site decide it. Queensland does not run daylight saving, so from October to April we are an hour behind and we book calls to suit your day.
Sydney. Also run from Brisbane. Sydney is the market where a service area should be drawn by travel time, not by a circle on a map. A plumber in the inner west taking jobs on the northern beaches loses the response-time argument to someone local, and response time is the whole pitch on emergency work. Sydney also has the dearest paid clicks of the three in the trades, which makes the map and organic work worth more there per position gained.
Where to next
This page sits under SEO for tradies, which covers the map pack, reviews and the monthly process across all trades. If the website itself needs work, see SEO and web design for tradies. For the local side in one city, local SEO in Brisbane goes deeper.
