Quick answer
Change the instant form type from More volume to Higher intent, which adds a review screen before people submit. Add one multiple-choice question that filters out people you can't serve. Then connect the form to your CRM so every lead gets an automatic SMS and a phone call within minutes, not days.

Why lead forms attract junk
Meta's instant forms are built to be easy. On the default More volume form type, Meta prefills the person's name, email and phone from their account, so submitting can take two taps. That convenience brings three kinds of poor lead:
- Accidental or curious taps. People submit without really reading the offer, then don't recognise your call.
- Old contact details. Prefilled phone numbers and emails come from the person's account and may be out of date. People can edit them, but most don't.
- Wrong fit. People outside your area, budget or service range, because nothing on the form stops them.
Lead ads are still useful. You just need to add a little friction and respond fast.
Check these first
- In Ads Manager, open the ad and look at the instant form's Form type. If it says More volume, that is the first thing to change.
- Count the custom questions. If the form only collects name, phone and email, you have no way to qualify.
- Check where leads go. If someone downloads a CSV once a week, response time is the problem.
- Look at the ad set location. People living outside your service area should be excluded.
Cause and fix table
| What you see | What it means | How to fix it | How long it takes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Numbers that ring out or are disconnected | Prefilled details are old, or accidental taps | Switch to Higher intent so people confirm details on a review screen | 15 minutes (new form) |
| Leads from outside your area | Audience or form doesn't filter location | Tighten location; add a suburb or postcode question | 15 minutes |
| People don't remember filling in the form | Follow-up was too slow | Connect a CRM and send an instant SMS | 1 to 2 hours |
| Fewer leads in your download than in Ads Manager | Leads older than 90 days can't be downloaded | Connect a CRM so every lead is stored | 1 to 2 hours |
| Lots of leads, very few jobs | Form is optimised for volume, not quality | Higher intent form plus a qualifying question | Allow a week to compare |
Form settings that raise quality
When you create an instant form, Meta offers three form types:
- More volume (the default): quick to submit on mobile, designed for more leads.
- Higher intent: adds a note under contact fields that your business may follow up, and a review screen where people confirm their details before submitting.
- Rich creative: lets you add images, colour and extra text to explain the offer.
Meta suggests Higher intent when every lead needs follow-up or further qualification, which describes most tradies and service businesses. Note that Meta only shows Higher intent forms in Facebook and Instagram feeds on mobile, not on desktop. Expect fewer leads and a higher cost per lead. Judge it on cost per booked job instead.
Published forms can't be edited. To change the form type, duplicate the form, change it and attach the new form to your ad.
Add a qualifying question
One well-chosen multiple-choice question filters more junk than three free-text ones. Good examples:
- Which suburb is the job in? (list your service areas, plus "Somewhere else")
- When do you need this done? (This week, This month, Just looking)
- What type of job is it? (your main services)
Meta also supports conditional answers, short answers and an appointment request question. Every extra question lowers volume, so add one, measure for a week, then decide on a second.
Send leads to your CRM
Meta keeps leads available for download for only 90 days after someone submits a form, and it recommends a CRM or frequent downloads so you don't lose them. Meta lists three ways to connect:
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Direct integration | Your CRM connects straight to Meta Business Suite | CRMs listed in Meta's integrations |
| Third-party tool | A connector such as Zapier or LeadsBridge passes leads across, no code | Most small businesses |
| Custom integration | Your developer uses Meta's Webhooks and Graph API | Custom systems |
To connect a CRM you need to be a Page admin with leads access. If your business has customised leads access in Meta Business Suite, someone with full access must also give the CRM permission, or leads won't arrive.
Facebook lead ads to GoHighLevel
GoHighLevel connects to Facebook through its own Meta integration in each sub-account. HighLevel's help centre covers connecting your Page, mapping form fields such as name and phone to contact fields, and using the Facebook Lead Form Submitted workflow trigger. Filter that trigger by Page and form, then send an instant SMS, notify your team and create an opportunity. We set this up as part of our GoHighLevel consulting.
Speed to lead
Meta's best-practice page recommends capturing leads immediately through a CRM, and running lead ads during hours when you can respond quickly. A simple routine:
- Instant SMS confirming you got their enquiry and will call shortly.
- A call from a person as soon as possible during business hours.
- If no answer, a second call later that day and a short text.
- Schedule ads to run only during hours someone can call back, if your ad set budget type allows it.
Australian detail
Meta requires a link to your privacy policy on every lead form. If you follow up with marketing emails or SMS rather than replying to the enquiry, Australia's spam rules apply: the ACMA says you need consent, clear sender identification and a working unsubscribe. Set your CRM's SMS sending hours to your local time zone. This is general information, not legal advice.
Seeing junk from Google Ads too? See spam leads from Google Ads. If leads are fine but sales aren't, read Facebook ads getting clicks but no sales.
When to get help
If you've changed the form and leads are still poor, a specialist checks the audience, the offer and whether conversion data from your CRM is being sent back to Meta. We build lead campaigns in your own ad account, with leads flowing to your CRM.
