The short answer
A good SEO agency for a Geelong business plans for a catchment far bigger than the city, taking in the Surf Coast, the Bellarine and the northern suburbs. Ask how they'd track rankings across those towns and what they report. Our 32 staff do the work in house, and retainers run month to month.
Your customers don't all live in Geelong
Geelong behaves like a hub. People drive in from Torquay and the Surf Coast, from Ocean Grove and the rest of the Bellarine, from Lara and Corio to the north, for specialist appointments at University Hospital Geelong, for study at Deakin's Waurn Ponds campus, for shopping on Pakington Street and for services a smaller town can't support.
The traffic runs the other way as well. Plenty of Geelong electricians, cleaners, landscapers and mobile services spend half the week on the Surf Coast Highway or the Bellarine Highway. And there's the Melbourne link: people who commute up the Princes Freeway or on the train, and households who moved down from the city and arrived without a single local supplier.
For search, all of that comes down to one fact. The person looking for you may be standing in Torquay, and Google shows them results near Torquay. A Belmont business that ranks well for "electrician Geelong" when checked from Belmont can be nowhere for the same search typed in Ocean Grove. A ranking report run from one location, usually the agency's own, hides that completely.
So when you compare agencies, the useful question isn't "can you rank us in Geelong". It's "which parts of our catchment can you reach, and how will you prove it?"
Questions that sort Geelong proposals quickly
Where do you check rankings from?
Ask whether they track results from several points across your catchment, such as central Geelong, Torquay and Ocean Grove, or only one. Map results change noticeably over those distances.
How will you cover the towns we service?
The honest answer is a page for each area you genuinely work in, with real content about the work there, backed by reviews that mention those places. Town pages with only the name swapped don't hold up.
What does the monthly report lead with?
Calls, forms and bookings by source should come before any keyword chart. If a report opens with positions, ask what those positions produced.
Who does the work?
Some agencies sell the account locally and pass the work to freelancers elsewhere. Ask for roles, and ask whether the person writing your pages has ever looked at your business.
What are the exit terms?
Notice period, who owns Search Console and the Business Profile, and what happens to content written for you. Get it in writing before you sign.
How we'd answer those ourselves
We track rankings from multiple points across the area you serve, and the audit shows you the gaps town by town. Area pages are written by our own staff, and you can see who they are on our team page. Business Profile work, including service area set up for mobile businesses, is part of our local SEO service. Every report starts with enquiries. Retainers are month to month, and your accounts stay in your name whether you stay or not. The full scope of the work is on our SEO page.
A city, two coasts and a map pack that moves
Map pack results for most services are drawn from a few kilometres around the searcher. In practice, central Geelong businesses do well for people in Newtown, Geelong West and Belmont, while searchers in Torquay and Ocean Grove often see their own town's operators first. On the Surf Coast and the Bellarine, organic results carry more of the load, which is where area pages and reviews earn their keep.
Competition varies a lot by category. Health, legal and trade terms in central Geelong are contested by established local firms. Many of the smaller towns in the catchment have thin competition, so a well built page there can move sooner than you'd expect. We'll show you which is which before you commit to anything.
Around the region
We also work with businesses in Newtown, Belmont, Corio, Torquay and Ocean Grove, and across the rest of Victoria. The full list is on our service areas page.

True. Our office is in Pallara, Queensland, and we work with Geelong clients over calls and screen shares. What matters is whether someone picks up and whether the work gets done. Judge us on the audit.
