How does Google Ads billing work in Australia?

Where to find your GST invoice, why Google charged you mid-month, and what to do when a card is declined.

Quick answer

Google says all Google Ads sales in Australia attract 10% GST for accounts with an Australian business address. Your tax invoices are under Billing, then Documents, from the fifth working day of the next month. Currency and time zone are fixed when the account is created, so a wrong setup usually means opening a new account.

This guide is for owners and bookkeepers who need the invoice for BAS, want to know why a charge came early, or have a declined card. It is part of our Google Ads help centre. It is general information, not tax advice: check GST treatment with your accountant.

Check these first

  1. Find your payment setting. Click the Billing icon, then Settings. "How you pay" shows automatic payments (pay after your ads run) or manual payments (pay in advance).
  2. Read the Billing summary. It shows recent charges, your next automatic payment and any declined payment with a reason.
  3. Check the payments profile. In Billing, then Settings, confirm the business name and address match your business. Your invoices use these details.
  4. Check the account currency. Amounts across the account show it. If it isn't AUD, see the section on wrong country or currency below.

How Google Ads charges you

Automatic payments and threshold charges

With automatic payments, Google charges your card or bank account on the first day of each month, or earlier when your costs reach your payment threshold. That is why you can be charged mid-month, sometimes more than once.

Google can raise the threshold automatically when your costs reach it before the month ends. You can see the current amount on the Billing summary page. Some advertisers can raise it themselves under Billing, Settings, How you pay, for fewer, larger charges.

Manual payments (prepay)

You add funds first and ads run until the balance is used. Google sends prepay customers two sets of invoices: one when you prepay and one at the end of the month. Unused funds are refunded if you cancel. See how to cancel Google Ads and get a refund.

Monthly invoicing

Larger, established businesses can apply to Google for a credit line and pay by invoice. Google decides who qualifies.

GST, ABN and claiming it back

Google's tax help page lists Australia under Google Australia Pty Limited. It says Google Ads sales in Australia carry 10% GST, and that this affects accounts with Australian business addresses. So a month with $1,000 of clicks costs $1,100 on your card.

The ATO says that to claim a GST credit you must be registered for GST and, for purchases over $82.50, hold a tax invoice from the supplier. Google's monthly GST invoice is that document. Download it each month and give it to your bookkeeper with the BAS paperwork.

Check the supplier name and ABN printed on the invoice match what your accountant expects. If your own business name or address is wrong on the invoice, fix it in the payments profile so future invoices are right.

How to download invoices for BAS

  1. In Google Ads, click the Billing icon, then Documents.
  2. Tick the months you need, or the box at the top left to select all.
  3. Click Download selected, choose the format and download. Tax invoices come as PDFs.

Google says the monthly GST invoice is available from the fifth working day of the following month, and isn't generated on weekends or bank holidays. If the invoice total differs from the billing summary by a day or two of spend, that is normal timing. Credits and adjustments in the same period can also cause a gap.

Payment declined: causes and fixes

Google's help is blunt: a decline comes from your bank or card company, and Google Ads support can't fix it for you. Ads usually stop until a payment goes through.

  1. Open the Billing summary and read the decline reason, date and amount.
  2. Call your bank if no reason is shown. Common causes are an expired card, a daily or overseas transaction limit, a fraud block on an unfamiliar charge, or insufficient funds.
  3. Go to Billing, then Settings, then Payment methods. Find the declined card and click Fix. Retry it, or choose Use a different payment method.
  4. Add a backup payment method. Google only charges it if the primary one is declined.

Wrong billing country, currency or time zone

Google's help says your currency and your time zone are permanently set when you set up the account. The billing country in the payments profile generally can't be edited either. If any of these is wrong, Google's suggestion is to open a new account with the right settings. You can copy campaigns across, but historical data stays in the old account.

This often happens when a freelancer overseas set the account up in their currency. Before you switch, keep the old account so you still have its reports and invoices, then pause its campaigns.

If an agency manages your ads

When the ad account is in your name with your card attached, Google charges you directly and the invoices come to you. Our management fee is quoted in writing and billed separately from your ad spend, so the two never get mixed up. If you can't see billing at all, ask for Admin access to your own account. Suspended accounts with a billing reason are covered in Google Ads account suspended, and budget planning in how much Google Ads cost in Australia.

When to get help

If charges don't match your campaigns, a specialist checks every customer ID on the card, the transaction history, threshold changes and credits. We do that as part of Google Ads management, and the account stays in your name.
